# How to read a Connecticut business credential record

> Credentials, statuses, agencies, how businesses are grouped, and what is left out.

## How to read these records

### Credential

The state's word for a license, permit, registration or certification. Each has a code — a prefix for the kind
and a number — and belongs to one agency: Consumer Protection, Public Health, Agriculture, Banking, and others.

### Active

A credential is shown as active when the state file marks it active with one of these statuses: active, active in
renewal, active under review, active by provisional, approved, qualified. Inactive, closed, lapsed and denied
credentials are only counted, by kind.

### One record per business

The state file has no business number. Credentials are grouped when the business name and the ZIP code are the
same. Two locations of a chain are two records; one business spelled two ways is two records.

### What is not here

Individuals of any kind; product registrations (cannabis, pesticide, brands); securities and investment filings;
disciplinary actions. A registration as home improvement contractor is not a proof of skill or insurance.

**For owners and managers: does
your company have 30 to 200 employees?**

AI labs pay companies to license their internal workflows (SOPs,
documentation, support tickets), anonymized and under contract. You keep ownership and pay nothing.
